Leading the way: The right type of lead to help keep your greyhound safe

As all dog owners would hopefully agree, the safety of the animal must come first - which is why we advise that greyhounds should only be walked using correctly fitted fishtail collars or harnesses with a proper lead attached.

We have had a few people ask us about extendable leads as they think this is a good way for their dog to have more range whilst walking - we are strongly against the use of extendable leads for greyhounds.

It’s important to keep in mind that a greyhound can reach 40mph in less than four strides. If they are on an extendable lead, this will snap, get caught around their legs and cause injury to the hound and/or handler.

If a greyhound 'takes off' while wearing an extendable lead, the outcome can be very serious or even fatal, especially if the lead is attached to a collar around the dog’s neck. Handlers have also been known to sustain injuries and broken bones.

Dangers of extendable leads for greyhounds (and handlers):

  • The sudden stop of the lead can cause injuries

  • The cord can snap

  • The length can put them in danger and can wrap them up with another dog, which could cause a fight

  • It's a trip hazard and can also cause injuries to bystanders

  • The sudden jerk on their neck can cause neck injury and even spinal injury

  • There is a risk that your dog could be hit by a car if you haven't locked the lead

  • The dog can get twisted in the cord, which can lead to the need for amputations of tail, leg etc

  • Extendable leads can malfunction over time

  • Using an extendable lead teaches the dog to pull on the lead.
